What you see in the photo above is the LED Incapacitator, a nonlethal weapon that can make people sick. It’s being done by Intelligent Optical Systems, on a contract from Homeland Security.
The LED Incapacitator works by using its light-emitting diodes to emit pulses of light that are super-bright and occur at rapidly changing wavelengths. The result is nausea, disorientation or even vomiting.
Right now, a prototype exists already and will be tested this fall. After that, the last phase will be the work on making it smaller, as the current 15 inch length is too big to be carried around hanging from a belt.
By 2010, this nonlethal weapon should enter the inventory of the police, border patrol and the National Guardsmen.
